DALI

The history of Dali began in the basement of the home of Peter Lyngdorff, a famous audio engineer and businessman. It was he who is still the main shareholder of the company, and it was at his instigation that the Danish engineers, who cut their teeth on the production of American Cerwin Vega speakers for the European market, began developing their own speakers. This happened in 1983, and three years later the first Dali factory building was built on the outskirts of Aarhus. Since then, it has already been completed four times, and most recently a branch was opened in China. In total, 130 people are employed in production, and the company is managed by five top managers. Moreover, four of them are engineers. Dali is especially proud of this fact. “We are all enthusiasts and audiophiles,” says the company’s general director Lare Worre, “we are not a company of marketers, we ourselves all really love music, hi-fi and good sound and do what we love. And at the same time we understand well how it is works”. Despite the fact that Dali is an abbreviation (Danish Audiophile Loudspeakers Industries), many associate the company name with Salvador Dali. In fact, the producers agreed on this issue with the artist’s family, and they were not against it.

The company focuses all its attention on the production of speakers: no headphones, receivers, etc. To the question “why don’t you make headphones,” they answer “why don’t winemakers brew beer?” While most companies focus on releasing as many products as possible and reaching as many audiences as possible, Dali is completely focused on producing quality speakers, with special attention to detail and detail, but more on that later. The factory itself is located in the Danish countryside among farmers, cows and endless green meadows. First of all, it’s beautiful. Secondly, land here is cheap. This is the only way to open production in Denmark, otherwise it would have cost a lot of money. The factory employs 150 people and the same number in China; under strict Danish leadership, they produce some components and the most inexpensive series of speakers. Why Denmark? Dali executives are confident that development cannot be separated from production, unlike other areas. After all, high-quality acoustics is an art.

The main thing for Dali is industrial design and the integrity of all elements. The point of this is to create the highest quality and cost-effective product possible. In simple words, so that the consumer gets the maximum for the money he is willing to spend. Full compliance of all products is important: it cannot be that one part sounds better than another, all speakers must reproduce the sound equally, exactly as it should be. You can’t just pick up any box and any speaker. To obtain high-quality equipment, with the help of high technology and research, specialists find the ideal shape and combination of materials, and the consumer receives the sound as it should be.

As you understand, the company does not produce acoustics for the mass market. For the first 10 years of their existence, they sold only in their own stores, but then they entered the international market, which did not mean a loss of quality or a change in focus.

Only the company’s junior lines are assembled at the Chinese plant – this is a completely new series of Zensor speakers, as well as the even more affordable Concept series. These speakers clearly embody one of the main principles of DALI – to treat the youngest models with the same reverence as the older ones. Moreover, according to Lars, younger models have to pay much more attention, since it is much more difficult to achieve good results on a limited budget. As a result, Zensor does not betray its “budget” essence in any way. Yes, she’s not there. For example, the cases of all floorstanding speakers in the series have an aluminum podium, and the front panel is covered with piano varnish – even the flagships of some brands cannot boast of such a finish. The speaker is carefully tuned, and special care is taken to ensure that it is not a heavy load for the amplifier; the impedance curve of all speakers in the series is as flat as possible. The design of the tweeter, which uses internal damping and a sound-absorbing material located directly under the soft radiating dome, which damps back radiation and thereby significantly reduces distortion, speaks volumes about how carefully the Zensor was developed. Highly qualified Dali specialists always recommend that their clients install speakers only directly. This is because distortion at high frequencies is directed along the axis of the drivers, and if the speakers are standing straight, then these distortions are located outside the boundaries of the listening area. The Dali speaker system and speakers differ from B&W in that the drivers of the B&W speakers are rotated to create the necessary dispersion in the listening area, and the Dali speakers have the same result, but without the orientation of the drivers.

During the development of speakers, Dali employees pay special attention to the so-called temporal coherence. Temporal coherence should be understood as the time coordination of emissions over the entire frequency range. Of course, many driver developers dream of achieving such a result, but so far, unfortunately, not everyone can achieve such a result as Dali. For a long time, the Danish company Dali has been one of the best manufacturers of high-quality and cutting-edge speaker systems for home and car. With products from Dali (speakers, subwoofers, acoustic systems) you can always enjoy excellent sound, and all because, unlike other manufacturers (for example, Triangle, B&M, etc.), Dali acoustics are protected from various sound distortions, have protection against exposure to dust, moisture and sudden temperature changes; it also differs from all other speaker systems in its magnetic shielding. Subwoofers and other equipment of the company are manufactured carefully and with high quality. A distinctive feature of Dali products is that the company’s experienced employees pay attention to every detail, and this makes it possible to produce products with virtually no defects. Another feature of Dali acoustics can be considered the presence of a crossover, which is optimized for a particular model. With the help of a crossover, you can change the frequencies for the best sound of the speaker system, depending on the tastes and requirements of the listener.

In some countries, in most cases, very simple speakers are supplied (Suite and Concept), while in Japan and the USA – only top-end speaker models (Megaline, Helicon and Euphonia). That’s why residents of some countries prefer to buy Dali products, since they are budget-level products, while residents of other countries see Dali acoustics as a High-End class system. The Mentor series of acoustic systems can be said to combine both. For the Mentor series speakers, a new woofer and tweeters were specially developed, and the housing was improved. The Mentor speakers, like the Icon, contain a combined HF module, which consists of a tweeter and a ribbon driver. They are located in a metal frame, which has damping properties and provides excellent heat dissipation. Each HF head has an individual acoustic design, and therefore they, as a rule, do not interfere with each other. The woofers produce high-quality bass both at high volume levels and at not very high levels. Specialists and designers also developed an original speaker panel. It is now more separated from the main speaker body. The Mentor series speakers combine all the best features and therefore have an expressive and detailed sound. Dali officially refuses to certify their speakers according to THX, because they consider the requirements contained in this certificate to be outdated. When it was developed, the main goal was to improve in any way the very mediocre sound of the then soundtracks. Today, the quality of the audio track on Blu-ray is often superior to the soundtrack from a CD, so there is no longer a problem with the need to artificially “improve” something. And there is no reason to build the rear channels to special specifications that enhance the diffusion of sound waves in order to hide the flaws of the soundtrack. Now you can honestly build a home theater from completely identical and high-quality loudspeakers in order to get the most from the soundtrack for films or concerts. This is exactly the approach that DALI professes.

Today, there is quite fierce competition among manufacturers of acoustic systems and speakers, which is why many of them transfer the place of production of their products to China, and, unfortunately, the quality of their products suffers from this. Dali, unlike everyone else, makes almost all of its speakers, with the exception of Concept, only in Denmark. There is no doubt about the quality of Dali products and their excellent acoustic characteristics, since during production there is no conveyor, which means that each product is assembled by hand at one workplace. Each speaker undergoes thorough testing on several parameters and meets international quality standards.
