Onkyo A-9130: Affordable integrated amplifier perfect for beginners

The Onkyo A-9130 integrated stereo amplifier is a real gift for those who would like to join Hi-Fi sound without spending significant money. Despite its very reasonable price, this device has many proprietary technologies, excellent build quality, and also very broad functionality. The output stages of the amplifier are built using WRAT (wideband signal amplification) technology, and have three stages according to the Darlington circuit. Thanks to this, it was possible to obtain good compatibility of the amplifier with acoustics of various brands, including low-impedance ones – a rare quality for such an inexpensive model. Shallow negative feedback provides the necessary stability of the device, and at the same time does not narrow its dynamic range, allowing the Onkyo A-9130 to sound wide and large.

A special Bass Boost circuit provides deep bass reproduction that is seamlessly integrated into the overall frequency range, so the Onkyo A-9130 does not have overload in the midbass even when playing the most complex music. To adjust the volume, a patented circuit is used, which ensures a minimum noise level at any signal value. The necessary energy for the amplifier is provided by a power supply on a powerful transformer and dual filter capacitors of high total capacity.

The Onkyo A-9130 amplifier features a 1.6mm thick rigid chassis and, combined with large anti-vibration feet, is virtually free of unwanted resonance. The new display shows the value of the active input. High quality speaker terminals provide a fixed cable connection. Large clear screw terminals are spaced far apart and easily accessible, and are made of non-magnetic material to prevent interference. Analog inputs include MM Phono and five gold-plated RCA connectors, there is also a preamp output and a power input. The amplifier power is 2 x 60 W.

Low gain circuits with discrete transistors provide wide bandwidth from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. The high-quality Wolfson WM8718 digital-to-analog converter decodes digital sources at 192 kHz/24-bit performance. Optical (TOSLINK) or coaxial audio inputs are used for connection, and when an analog input signal is detected, the digital path is automatically turned off to minimize possible interference.

Onkyo’s Common Mode Bass Enhancement eliminates phase shift between low and mid frequencies starting at 300 Hz. Bass response is optimized without compromising audio clarity, which is especially useful at low volume levels where low-frequency sounds are least audible. When direct mode is enabled, the signal bypasses the audio circuitry and common-mode bass boost. Combined with optimized amplification circuitry, the shortest signal paths ensure accurate reproduction. Typically, at low volume levels, the signal approaches the noise level of the component and is correspondingly discolored. To avoid this, the Onkyo A-9130 offers an Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry that is adjusted so that less than half the normal attenuation is required, and as a result the signal does not approach noise levels.
