Onkyo TX-8270: Powerful modern stereo reciever

The Onkyo TX-8270 is a pre-top model in the company’s line of two-channel receivers, and it is distinguished not only by good power efficiency, traditional for Onkyo components, but also by a complete set of tools for integration into the most modern stereo system.

Let’s start with power – the receiver is capable of delivering up to 160 watts per channel at a load of 6 ohms. Unlike its cinema counterparts, the device does not need to consume current to service the central and rear channels, so there is no doubt that it will have enough energy to drive floor-standing speakers when operating in stereo. In addition, Onkyo engineers have always been famous for their serious approach to designing power supplies for their equipment.

However, in addition to the power amplifier section, we are also interested in the functional equipment of the TX-8270; is it capable of becoming the heart of a modern audio system? After all, the main role of the receiver is to bring together and distribute audio and video signals in such a way as to ensure maximum ease of control. From this point of view, the device has everything you need, and even more. Let’s start with the digital part.

A DAC built on an AK4438 chip from Asahi Kasei, theoretically capable of supporting 32-bit/384 kHz PCM signals, is responsible for processing and converting incoming signals. And although the receiver is more focused on music playback, the presence of a separate output for low-frequency effects with an adjustable cutoff frequency allows you to provide, if desired, additional pressure in the bass range when watching a movie by connecting a good subwoofer.

The wireless and network capabilities of the receiver are almost limitless. It can connect to the network via either wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi; it also supports Bluetooth version 4.1 for connecting to smartphones, tablets and PCs. Built-in music services include Tidal, Spotify, Deezer and TuneIn. Multiroom capabilities are represented by the proprietary FlareConnect protocol, AirPlay, as well as universal DTS Play-Fi.

In terms of supported audio file formats, the device is capable of handling signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz and DSD 5.6 MHz, provided they are supplied via a network or USB input. In general, the set of digital and analog inputs on the Onkyo TX-8270 is quite comprehensive – two optical, coaxial, three linear on RCA, as well as an input to an MM phono preamplifier. Well, the main advantage of the model is, of course, the presence of 4 HDMI ARC inputs with support for 4K, HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

For fans of traditional radio, we note that the receiver is equipped with an analog FM tuner, as well as a digital DAB/DAB+ module. You can control the device using either the included remote control or the proprietary Onkyo Controller mobile application. In general, listing all the advantages and capabilities of the Onkyo TX-8270 could take several pages, and we still need to find out how capable it is of replacing an integrated amplifier of equal class.
