Magnetar UDP900: Powerful Blu-ray player perfect for film buffs

Magnetar introduces a new UHD Blu-ray player – the UDP900 model with a number of improvements. The device will compete with flagship universal players for playing both video and audio discs, such as the Panasonic UB9000, Pioneer UDP-LX800 or Reavon UBR-X200.

The Magnetar UDP900 is almost twice as heavy as the younger version (15.5 kg versus 8 kg) and is built on a double-layer aluminum alloy chassis with a reinforced structure. The Magnetar UDP900 features an upgraded dual power supply (powerful 60W digital transformer + 60W analogue toroidal transformer) and a new 6-layer motherboard with ultra-low noise TCXO crystal oscillator.

The press release mentions high quality capacitors ELNA, NCC and WIMA. Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by an ESS Saber PRO 8-channel audio DAC with 32-bit Hyperstream II. The ESS9028PRO drives 7.1 RCA outputs, while the ESS9038PRO (DNR up to 140dB) drives balanced stereo XLR outputs.

When it comes to playing disc formats, the system demonstrates its versatility. In addition to all popular formats, the new player plays DVD audio and SACD discs in addition to DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray. For multimedia playback, the Magnetar UDP900, like the younger model, uses a quad-core MediaTek MT8581 processor.

This allows you to playback video signals in 4K Ultra HD formats with HDR standards such as Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and color spaces: BT.2020/BT.709/BT.601. The Magnetar UDP900 media player is also capable of HDR to SDR conversion and upscaling to 4K. Audio support includes Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Atmos and DTS-X.

All these features leave nothing to be desired for film buffs. Audio and video playback with the built-in media player also supports DSD64/128, multi-channel DSD64 and 192 kHz/24-bit PCM with AIFF, ALAC, APE, FLAC and WAV audio. Files can be played not only through USB hard drives with a capacity of up to 16 TB, but also through a home network using the DLNA or SMB protocols. On the back of Magnetar’s new UDP900 4K Blu-ray player there are noticeable upgrades over the existing UDP800. These are additional output ports, including analog 7.1 RCA, as well as USB DAC for music.

A high-performance switching power supply specifically designed for the Magnetar UDP900 powers the digital motherboard area. A high-performance 60W low noise transformer with two-stage filter design along with various Japanese Rubycon electrolytic capacitors are used to ensure high transient response.

All this enhances the surround sound and high-resolution sound system. A second 60W toroidal transformer powers the analog audio components. It uses imported magnetic core, high quality oxygen-free copper wiring, metal shields and full epoxy filling.

This filling serves to reduce vibration noise and heat generation, as well as improve power output and sound quality. The double-walled aluminum alloy housing provides high rigidity, reduces vibration and provides isolation from electrical noise.

Over the past 3-4 years, Oppo has closed its business, Samsung has stopped producing 4K UHD Blu-ray players, and Sony and Panasonic have minimized the release of new models. As a result, the market has partially filled the demand with new products from Reavon, Pannde and Magnetar, whose players are still equipped with a quad-core MediaTek MT8581 chip and support USB hard drives (up to 16 TB) for playing local media files.

By releasing the Magnetar UDP900 video player, the company is trying to gain a foothold in the “ultra-high-end” segment. Its current competitors are models such as the Panasonic DP-UB9004 or the Pioneer UDP-LX800. Thus, the similar designation for Magnetar models is certainly not accidental.
