Yamaha RX-A1080: High-performance AV receiver

The Aventage line of high-performance AV receivers is based on an audio design concept designed to deliver solid, full-bodied movie sound and accurate music reproduction. Thanks to a thoughtful, harmonious combination of traditional and advanced technologies, every factor influencing the quality of sound reproduction (from materials and components to design, layout, unique vibration-damping support and fine-tuning parameters) works to maximize the latter. As a result, every Aventage Series model is capable of reproducing even the smallest details of high-definition audio material, so listeners can enjoy truly premium studio sound in their own home.

In the index of this model, instead of the usual letter “V” there is an “A”, indicating that it belongs to the flagship Aventage line. The aluminum front panel prevents interference and interference from penetrating into the body. About a sixth of its area is devoted to the fluorescent display. Below it is a flap that hides keys for accessing the main setup and listening modes, as well as an HDMI input with MHL support and a USB port optimized for working with i-devices. We have a 7-channel unit (110 W/channel, 8 Ohms, 2 channels loaded), which allows us to implement a 5.1 system with a height channel or with the connection of front speakers using a bi-amping scheme. Its chassis is equipped with an additional central support (ART Wedge technology), as well as an H-shaped transverse frame, due to which vibrations are effectively damped even at high output levels. The left and right amplification channels are physically and electrically isolated, and their circuits are symmetrical.

The hybrid power supply has separate circuits for analog and digital components; if necessary, it is capable of dramatically increasing the current output to the load. The amplifiers are assembled using audiophile quality discrete elements; The stability of the clock generator has been increased, the characteristics of the DACs have been improved (a high-quality ESS SABER Premier ES9007S chip has been installed).

The RX-A1080’s solid and robust aluminum body boasts a flawless black or titanium silver finish. The aluminum front panel looks stylish and strict, the controls and inputs are hidden under the cover. The clear display is easy to read from a distance. Be sure to auto-calibrate the system and optimize the sound of the receiver, taking into account the parameters of the speakers and the room. It is performed quickly and quite accurately, but we still recommend going to the manual settings menu and checking the accuracy of the speaker parameters. And if you have a sound pressure meter on hand to fine-tune the levels, then even better.

It is convenient to work with informative menus using the remote control. It allows you to switch inputs, control volume and select from a variety of audio processing programs; if you want to control the process from a tablet or smartphone, download the free Yamaha AV Controller app for iOS and Android devices. A well-thought-out interface and bright icons will help you understand all the functions of the RX-A1080. With its help, it is much easier to broadcast a signal from various devices and services, but it is more convenient to change the volume using a regular remote control. As you might expect, the RX-A1080’s equipment is the envy of many competitors. It has as many as eight HDMI inputs and three HDMI outputs; all comply with the latest HDMI 2.0 specification and support upscaling to 4K Ultra HD.

No receiver today can do without streaming functions; Having Spotify Connect, Napster and vTuner Internet radio will allow you to discover a lot of new tunes. A DLNA certificate allows you to play music collections from a laptop or NAS server over your home network; owners of iOS devices can use AirPlay 2 for this purpose.

The Yamaha RX-A1080 has the latest generation of MusicCast Surround technology, which allows you to include wireless speakers in a 5.1-channel configuration. MusicCast is a new revolution in the field of network audio content transmission, allowing devices in this category to be used together or separately. The system is completely controlled from one intuitive, fast and easy to use software application. You can connect a soundbar, wireless speaker system, AV receiver, HiFi audio system – whatever suits you best; You can combine and mutually adapt different devices, as well as expand your MusicCast system over time. This all-new solution from Yamaha gives everyone everything they need, every time. For more information, visit the dedicated MusicCast web page.

MusicCast uses a highly efficient wireless audio network that allows digital music files from your smartphone, PC, or network storage to be streamed to other MusicCast devices in your home. The system also allows you to share music from external devices connected to the receiver, such as a TV or BD player. You can also stream audio content from smartphones or tablets connected via Bluetooth® technology to MusicCast devices in multiple rooms.

The Yamaha RX-A1080 AV Receiver offers Bluetooth® functionality, making it possible to wirelessly play music from smartphones and other devices. Compressed Music Enhancer is now optimized for Bluetooth audio, delivering music with original dynamics and expressiveness. You can stream music from the receiver to Bluetooth-enabled headphones for private listening, or to Bluetooth-enabled speakers.

The Yamaha RX-A1080 AV receiver provides full support for the latest HDMI standards. With 4K video playback at 60 frames per second, you get high-definition images without sacrificing quality. When transmitting 4K video signal, the system follows the HDCP2.2 standard for copyright protection. There is also support for the HDR (High Dynamic Range) Video format with improved image quality and increased detail in dark and light areas. In addition, the device supports a wider color gamut of the BT.2020 Pass-Through format.

The Zone B output provides 2-channel audio in another room. The presence of this output allows you to transmit a 2-channel audio signal to another room (zone). This leaves 5 output channels for the main zone. This means that you can listen to stereo sound in the second room. In this case, audio content from the same source will be played in both zones (simultaneous use of two signal sources is not possible).

Yamaha’s exclusive bass enhancement technology delivers richer bass than you’d expect from the size of the speakers, maintaining good sound localization and sound balance even with compact front speakers. If a subwoofer is used, this technology, along with increasing the volume of the front speaker woofers, enhances the bass of the subwoofer. You will enjoy exceptionally powerful and realistic sound when watching videos and listening to music.

Intelligent Amp Assign automatically assigns amplification channels to specific speakers based on which additional features are selected. For example, if zone 2 is disabled in a 7.1-channel system, all eight channels are used in the main zone. If zone 2 is connected, the two surround back channels are sent to the two speakers in zone 2, and the main zone is sent to the remaining six channels. Likewise, when CINEMA DSP 3D mode is turned on, the two front presence speakers are used instead of the two surround back speakers. If this mode is turned off, then the situation is the opposite. Additionally, if zone 2 is disabled in a 5.1.2-channel system supporting Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, all eight channels are used in the main zone. However, if Zone 2 is connected, the signals of the two height/ceiling channels are sent to the two speakers in Zone 2, and the signals of the remaining six channels are played in the main zone. With Intelligent Amp Assign, there’s no need to reconnect speaker cables at the rear of the receiver—Yamaha is making your life a little easier in another way.
