MoFi Electronics previously released a pair of monitor speakers called SourcePoint 8 and SourcePoint 10. These are now joined by the SourcePoint 888, the company’s first floorstanding speaker. Andrew Jones is once again responsible for the design. The SourcePoint 888 will debut at the Axpona trade show in the US. Delivery is expected to begin during the second quarter of 2024.
MoFi SourcePoint 888
The name SourcePoint 888 is derived from the use of three drivers with an eight-inch diameter. The unique dual drive magnet structure, paper pulp cone and concentrically mounted soft dome tweeter of monitor model SourcePoint 8 have been enhanced with two newly developed dedicated eight-inch woofers to create a three-way floorstanding speaker with exceptional bass extension and dynamics. The two additional woofers operate below 130 Hz, relieving the concentric driver of the task of producing deep bass, allowing it to be fully optimized for midrange and treble, providing greater sonic transparency.
The three-way crossover combines the drivers using carefully chosen crossover frequencies and slopes to blend the drivers together seamlessly, minimizing the audibility of out-of-band deviations and producing smooth on- and off-axis responses.
The new woofers use dual opposing neodymium magnets in a configuration that uses a short coil in a long magnetic hole. The magnetic field is completely uniform throughout the opening, resulting in a very linear and precisely controlled force for driving the cone. Additionally, each driver in the SourcePoint 888 operates in optimally sized individually isolated chambers, the construction of which adds significant rigidity to the cabinet to further reduce cabinet resonances. Finally, there are two sets of high-quality connection terminals for any bi-wire and bi-amp connectivity.
In the words of Andrew Jones: “My goal for the SourcePoint 888 is to improve on the technology and sound quality of the SourcePoint 8 and take it to an even higher level of performance.” To achieve this goal, a rear-ported floorstanding cabinet was designed to accommodate three eight-inch drivers. With SourcePoint 888, Andrew Jones continues MoFi Electronic’s mission to create premium components that honor Mobile Fidelity’s studio heritage and help form a complete source-to-output chain connected to the esteemed concepts of signal purity, reliability and precision.
Delivery will probably start during the second quarter of 2024.
