British speaker manufacturer Monitor Audio has launched a two-way monitor model called Studio 89. The name and shape of the new speaker refer to the culture of the 1980s, but the new Studio 89 is of course equipped with modern technical insights and solutions.

Monitor Audio’s Studio series was created in the 1980s and, according to the manufacturer, aimed to bring the experience of studio monitors to the living room. Small, compact and visually unique, the Studio 89 impresses with its uncompromising sound, which effortlessly fills even large rooms and delights its listeners. This is made possible by integrating Monitor Audio’s latest technologies and innovations, sourced from the Hyphn flagship.
The speaker itself is compact, but the design ensures that even in larger rooms the soundstage and the high level of detail always envelop the listener and bring real studio quality into the home. A significant part of this is played by the MTM (Mid-Tweeter-Mid) array, which provides the approximation of the reproduction of a point source.
The integration of the latest MPD (Micro-Pleated Diaphragm) III tweeter between the two RDT (Rigid-Diaphragm Technology) woofers with a diameter of 10.8 cm and the highly optimized 3rd order crossover ensure the perfect frequency response and absolutely perfect radiation characteristics. The resulting sound goes far beyond what you would expect from a speaker of this size in terms of quality and size, according to the recommendation of Monitor Audio.
The cone of the two woofers/midranges consists of three different wafer-thin layers that guarantee maximum strength and resilience. A layer of C-CAM (ceramic coated aluminum/magnesium) shimmers gold on the front. A honeycomb-shaped layer of Nomex acts as a carrier and at the rear the membrane is reinforced and stiffened by woven carbon fibers. The result: a super light and at the same time extremely hard, sturdy membrane.
Each driver must fit harmoniously into the configuration and the frequency transitions must be seamless and imperceptible. Therefore, after hours of listening and rigorous component selection, the crossovers were equipped with only the finest custom-made polypropylene and polyester capacitors and low-loss laminated steel air-core coils to ensure an immersive sound experience.
Monitor Audio Studio 89: housing
The Studio 89 has a stable and solid housing construction. The front plate (baffle) is 18 millimeters thick, all other sides are no less than 15 millimeters thick and the housing is also internally stiffened with struts. The internal bracing not only increases the rigidity of the housing, but also guides the air flow generated by the two woofers/center speakers in the housing to the two HiVe II bass reflex openings.

The housing design works in perfect harmony with the drivers and crossover and the speaker has been developed according to the principles of Monitor Audio’s Transparent Design Technology. This is a philosophy that believes that design and technology should always be in balance and that neither theme should dominate the other, as they are equally responsible for the final sound experience. The speakers are designed to blend harmoniously into any living space and beautifully complement their surroundings.
Inspired by the original Studio 15, the Studio 89 boasts a high-gloss black finish, combined with metal drivers that gently shimmer in matte gold. The Studio 89 is the only Monitor Audio speaker model available in this distinctive color combination.

Monitor Audio has created a suitable stand to place the Studio 89 at the right height. The Studio 89 Stand is designed to give the speaker a perfect base. The top plate is made of precision laser-cut steel, the column is made of extruded aluminum and the base is made of cast aluminum. The four height-adjustable feet are equipped with both chrome-plated studs for carpets and rubber feet for hard floors such as tiles, parquet or laminate, so that the Studio 89 stand offers perfect conditions at all times.

The Monitor Audio Studio 89 is now available for a suggested retail price of 2,348 euros per pair. The accompanying speaker stands sell for 600 euros per pair.
