Sonos has teamed up with Sonance, a pioneer in the consumer audio industry, to announce the release of new high-end in-ceiling speakers.
A pair of Sonos 8” In-Ceiling Speakers will be available in the spring for $999. These two-way models promise quality sound in a spacious area thanks to discreet installation behind an unobtrusive white magnetic grille. To ensure even sound distribution, the model uses a 1.2-inch tweeter with a fabric diffuser, placed in a horn-like waveguide, which in turn is located in the center of the 8-inch woofer.
The large-diameter speaker is equipped with a powerful high-excursion motor system and is capable of delivering smooth mid-frequency reproduction as well as deep bass down to 32Hz (±3dB). The speaker system is designed for a power of 225 watts and has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms.
Paired with the 2 x 125-watt Sonos Amp ($699), the speakers integrate with the Sonos app and can use Trueplay, the company’s proprietary automatic sound tuning system that analyzes sound reflections from walls and other surfaces, applying an equalizer to optimize sound. The amplifier can drive up to three pairs of Sonos architectural speakers connected in parallel.
The new 8-inch speaker model is the latest addition to Sonance’s Sonos Architectural lineup, which already includes 6-inch in-ceiling speakers and rectangular 2-way in-wall speakers. The speaker frame measures over 11 inches in diameter, has a mounting depth of 5.3 inches, and requires a 10.1-inch opening for installation.
