To improve an already good product, you need to add detail. Based on Tannoy’s successful Mercury Vi series of speakers, the ‘7’ range has seen a host of modifications designed to deliver an even more engaging and articulate sound than its award-winning predecessor. With every sound detail, the Mercury VII series strengthens its position as a leader in its price category.
Tannoy Mercury series speaker systems have been offering Hi-Fi fans a high-quality and inexpensive solution for building stereo and home theater systems for two decades. And each time Tannoy offered a more and more advanced product. It also happened this time. In order to reach a new quality level, Tannoy engineers completely redesigned Mercury systems and tried to avoid a number of compromises typical for budget models.
Three finishes are available: black and light oak and the most popular walnut (dark walnut). The new Mercury 7 line includes the Mercury 7.4 floorstanding model, two Mercury 7.2 and 7.1 bookshelf systems, a Mercury 7C center channel speaker, and is complemented by the TS2.8 SUB powered subwoofer, which is also offered in the same three finishes.
Tannoy Mercury 7.2 is the older shelf model in its line and, despite its increased dimensions, has a richer sound. This is a real Hi-Fi acoustics, the frequency and dynamic ranges of which allow it to accurately reproduce musical compositions of various genres. The external design of the speakers is made in the same style as other models in the series, and its main highlight is silver accent elements that harmonize well with the natural wood finish. Tannoy Mercury 7.2 is distinguished by very high quality workmanship with seamless joining of panels, which is rare for acoustics in this price category.
The Tannoy Mercury 7.2 speaker system has a classic two-way configuration. It is equipped with a 6-inch diameter woofer with a diffuser made of impregnated paper – a very common solution in Hi-Fi acoustics due to its musicality. The speaker is mounted on a non-resonating basket and equipped with a powerful magnet. Precise matching of the parameters of the emitter and the body, as well as the presence of a bass reflex with a rear-facing output hole, ensured bass reproduction from 42 Hz, which is a good indicator for such compact speakers.
The proprietary tweeter of the Tannoy Mercury 7.2 acoustics is equipped with a synthetic dome with a diameter of 28 mm and reproduces sound up to 32 kHz. Thus, the speaker allows you to fully realize the potential of the quality of recordings in new High Res formats, and the sound it reproduces is airy and detailed. One of the features of the models in this line is the crossover filter tuning frequency increased to 3.2 kHz, which ensures neutral and articulate reproduction of the vocal range. The Tannoy Mercury 7.2 speaker has stable impedance and good sensitivity, which ensures good compatibility with various integrated amplifiers and AV receivers. It is worth noting that to achieve optimal performance, it is recommended to place the speakers on reliable specialized stands, and use high-quality speaker cables for connection.
