AVID Acutus Dark Iron

AVID has unveiled the Acutus Dark Iron, marking its first turntable release in six years. This model boasts a revolutionary integrated motor design, setting it apart from its predecessors. Handcrafted in Cambridgeshire, England, the Acutus Dark Iron replaces the Acutus Dark Limited Edition. Responding to customer feedback, AVID introduced a sleek new ‘sparkling iron’ finish, offering a more cost-effective alternative to the chrome-finish Acutus models.

The Acutus Dark Iron features a revolutionary motor system that is directly connected to the main chassis. This innovative design ensures that the drive-belt alignment remains accurate, even when the turntable is leveled using the adjustable feet. As a result, any speed-related issues are completely eliminated.

Not only does this motor system enhance the overall smoothness of operation, but it also guarantees precise belt alignment. With its high-torque AC synchronous motor, the Acutus Dark Iron provides a tenfold increase in power compared to other turntables on the market. This not only improves control but also enhances stability.

AVID’s design incorporates twin round-section drive belts, allowing for free suspension movement without any fluctuations in speed. The power supply, which utilizes DSP technology, independently generates the frequency required for precise speed adjustment. Additionally, equipped with an 80 VA mains transformer, it functions as an integrated amplifier specifically tailored for the high-torque motor.

High-mass platter and upgradable mat

The turntable boasts a hefty 10 kg aluminum platter, complemented by a 10 mm damping disc and a TMShrunk felt-composite mat. For those looking to enhance vibration transfer and achieve superior sound quality, an upgrade to AVID’s precision resin mat is available.

Upgradable clamp

The AVID single-action clamp, made from solid aluminum with precision machining, presses records flat on the platter to minimize vibrations and reduce noise by directing them to the sub-chassis. AVID also provides a dual-operation enhancement for better management of different record thicknesses, getting rid of warps and air pockets to ensure a smooth connection between the record and platter.

Sub-chassis

The Acutus Dark Iron’s one-piece multi-fold aluminium casting offers strength with controlled movement. Coated with damping media, it neutralises vibrations, ensuring a linear and time-sensitive sound response. This coupled to a suspension system that ensures equal tuning for perfect balance with its 2.5 Hz isolation frequency preventing skipping and eliminating external vibrations.
