Piega Premium 801: Flagship Floorstander with New SSD Ribbon Horn Tweeter

Piega has launched the Premium 801 floorstanding speaker, the flagship of its Premium product line. According to the designers, this floorstanding speaker bridges the gap between the Premium 701 Gen2 and the Coax 611. The new Premium 801 combines familiar Piega design features with an innovative high-frequency solution: a newly developed SSD ribbon tweeter mounted in a horn.

The Premium 801 is based on the robust extruded aluminum profile of the Coax 611. The cabinet is formed under immense pressure of over 5,000 tons, a virtually unique process in loudspeaker production. According to the manufacturer, this allows for an extremely rigid and resonance-free construction in an elegant, slim design.

Inside, longitudinal bracing, a damping layer, and a newly developed wood-matrix bracing system ensure acoustic stability. The midrange driver operates in its own sealed enclosure, while four woofers in a bass-reflex system deliver powerful dynamics. The Premium 801 is the largest and most acoustically advanced model in the Premium line.

Piega Premium 801: SSD ribbon horn, new high-frequency technology

At the heart of the Premium 801 is the newly developed SSD (Super Symmetric Drive) ribbon tweeter RM 01-24. The moving mass of the diaphragm is just 0.03 grams, resulting in extremely fast impulse response and high detail resolution.

For the first time in the Premium Series, a specially developed horn mount is used. This nearly doubles efficiency and results in a lower crossover frequency of around 2.7 kHz. The horn precisely focuses the sound, reduces unwanted floor and ceiling reflections, and moves the acoustic center of the high frequencies almost down to the midrange driver. “The optimized dispersion, the lower crossover frequency, and the recessed position of the SSD tweeter ensure an exceptionally coherent transition to the midrange driver and a particularly cohesive and natural soundstage,” explains Roger Kessler, Chief Developer at Piega.

Piega Premium 801: FSD midrange driver and four FSD woofers

The midrange driver has been refined with a newly tuned crossover. It uses FSD (Full Symmetric Drive) technology, where the voice coil is perfectly symmetrical to the magnetic field. According to the designers, this results in exceptionally linear motion and a natural, relaxed sound reproduction.

Four FSD woofers handle the low frequencies. They deliver high power output, reliable bass control, and a maximum sound pressure level approximately 6.5 decibels higher than that of the Premium 701 Gen2.

Piega Premium 801: sound and radiation pattern

The Premium 801 combines exceptional resolution with dynamic power and a stage-like presence. Thanks to the low mass of the SSD ribbed tweeter, the high frequencies are extremely responsive, while the horn ensures even horizontal dispersion. The combination of the SSD tweeter, the sealed FSD midrange driver, and four powerful woofers creates a soundstage remarkably close to that of a concert hall—precise, natural, and impressively clear, both in quiet passages and at high volumes with full energy.

Moreover, the Premium 801 achieves a level of precision and neutrality typical of studio monitors, yet with a particularly musical and natural character for audiophiles. The result is a live experience that remains both analytically pure and emotionally captivating.

Piega Premium 801: amplifier-friendly design

The crossover filter is tuned for a smooth impedance curve and is amplifier-friendly. The Premium 801 is therefore equally suitable for powerful transistor amplifiers, modern Class-D amplifiers, and high-quality tube amplifiers. The dual speaker connections allow for bi-wiring and bi-amping. The specified sensitivity is 90 dB, so a very powerful amplifier is not necessary.

The specified frequency response ranges from 32 Hz to 50 kHz, and the impedance is four ohms. Its dimensions are 116 x 21 x 31 centimeters (H x W x D), its base has a diameter of 35 centimeters, and the Premium 801 weighs 39.6 kilograms.
