German audio manufacturer Vincent Audio has marked three decades of its Powerline series with the SA-32 AE — a special anniversary edition of its well-regarded hybrid stereo preamplifier, limited to just 200 units worldwide. The lineage stretches back to 1996, when the original SA-31 first appeared; it continued through the SA-31 MK and arrived at the SA-32 in 2017. The AE edition honours that legacy while bringing meaningful updates to both the circuitry and feature set.

Limited to 200 units, the anniversary edition arrives in a larger chassis that accommodates its expanded digital input section, including HDMI ARC.

A larger stage for more inputs

The SA-32 AE inherits the familiar hybrid concept but arrives in a roomier chassis — a practical decision that allows Vincent to expand the device's digital connectivity considerably. Alongside Bluetooth, coaxial, and optical inputs, the preamplifier now adds an HDMI port with Audio Return Channel (ARC), making it straightforward to integrate a modern television into a dedicated hi-fi system without additional adaptors or signal conversion.

Two 12AU7 tubes sit at the heart of the SA-32 AE's signal path, delivering the warm, enveloping character Vincent has tuned the preamplifier around since the Powerline series began in 1996.

New tubes, new topology

The valve complement has been overhauled. Where the original SA-32 used four 6N16 tubes throughout, the AE variant employs two 12AU7s and two ECC88s in distinct roles. The 12AU7 pair sits at the front of the signal path, immediately after the inputs; Vincent characterises their contribution as warm and enveloping. The ECC88 tubes operate within the tone control stage, functioning as phase splitters — a configuration that keeps the analogue voicing transparent and well-controlled.

From the original SA-31 in 1996 to this anniversary edition, Vincent's hybrid preamplifier line has evolved steadily in both design and capability.

The 12AU7 is widely favoured in preamplifier designs for its low noise floor and smooth midrange character, while the ECC88 — electrically equivalent to the 6DJ8 — brings fast transient response suited to splitting duties.

Power supply redesign

Vincent has fitted the SA-32 AE with an entirely new power supply centred on an R-Core transformer — a topology chosen for its low stray magnetic field and efficient energy transfer. Filtering capacitors from Wima and Nichicon complete the design, with the aim of minimising ripple voltage and maintaining stable operating conditions across the valve stages. The result, according to the manufacturer, is a measurably improved signal-to-noise ratio and reduced distortion throughout the audio band.

R-Core transformer and Wima and Nichicon capacitors form the backbone of the SA-32 AE's redesigned power supply, targeting lower ripple voltage and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 90 dB.

Pricing and availability

The Vincent SA-32 AE carries a recommended retail price of just under €2,000 and will be offered in black or silver finishes. With production capped at 200 units, availability is expected to be limited.
